We were delighted to welcome Councillor Dan Birch onto our Droitwich Bike Bus this week — marking the first time a Conservative councillor has joined one of our rides. His visit offered a fantastic opportunity for him to experience first‑hand how Bike Buses support local families on their journeys to school
Bike Buses are simple but powerful: groups of adults and children cycling together along a planned route, building confidence, improving road safety, and showing how active travel can become a normal, everyday choice for families. They are open to all abilities and help promote safer streets, healthier lifestyles, and reduced traffic congestion across Droitwich
Coun Birch joined our regular route to Westacre Middle School, cycling alongside local parents, children, volunteers, and members of our group. The ride gave him valuable insight into how a Bike Bus works in practice, and he heard directly from families about the need for safe, inclusive cycling options in our community
Matthew Kenny, Communications Officer for Droitwich Cycling, Walking & Wheeling Group, said:
“It was very positive to welcome Coun Birch on the Bike Bus. Active travel benefits everyone – from improving health to reducing traffic and making streets safer for children and families. Having councillors experience this first‑hand helps build understanding of what people need to feel confident when walking, cycling, or wheeling.”
We’re always encouraged when local leaders take the time to see our work up close. Experiencing a Bike Bus from the saddle helps highlight the joy, safety benefits, and community spirit that these rides create.
Coun Birch thanked everyone for the warm welcome and said:
“It’s an excellent scheme I would fully recommend to any family looking for a healthier way to travel to school.”
Every time a councillor, school leader, or local organisation joins us, it strengthens the message that active travel is not just a niche interest — it’s a practical, healthy, community‑building way to move around Droitwich.
Moments like this help us continue advocating for:
- Safer cycling and walking routes
- Better school‑run infrastructure
- Inclusive options for all ages and abilities
- Healthier, lower‑traffic neighbourhoods
